Multipurpose Zones
Pilchik designed this living room with three distinct zones: a central seating area, a writing desk, and a game table. The sofas are upholstered in a luxurious moss-green velvet, while the drapery and upholstery feature fabrics from Fermoie and Soane. A mix of antique and modern pieces, including a French writing desk, teak midcentury armchairs, and a family heirloom table, complements the rattan-and-glass side table from Serena & Lily and the linen-wrapped coffee table from Villa & House. The variety of textures and materials used in the room enhances its multifunctional purpose.
Hand-Painted Murals
For your next project, consider a hand-painted mural for a truly personalized touch. “Hand-painted murals are becoming a popular alternative to wallpaper and plaster and limewash looks,” says Leah Alexander of Beauty is Abundant. This playful and chic living room was transformed by Alexander’s favorite muralist in Atlanta, Jasmine Nicole Williams. The mural’s colors highlight the various shades found in the furniture and decor, creating a vibrant and cohesive space.
Earthy Tones
If you’re hesitant to venture away from neutrals, Alexis Pew of Kaminski + Pew invites you to explore a natural introduction to color with “warm, textural spaces featuring natural materials in moodier, earthy color palettes.” This approach instantly creates a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. “We’re shifting away from bright whites and grays towards more creams, browns, rusts, and muted greens,” says Pew.
Impactful Details
Pay attention to the details. In this living room designed by Noz Nozawa, every angle is filled with shapes and curves that highlight color, texture, and craftsmanship. There’s always something to admire. “While these details are not new in design and have a traditional feel, I’m noticing a growing interest in finer details, especially in tabletop design,” Nozawa explains.
Minimalist Floor Plans
Make way for a new approach to floor plans and furniture arrangement in 2024. “I foresee a shift towards less clutter and unnecessary objects in spaces,” says designer Hilary Matt. “Instead of filling the entire room with furniture, focus on intentional spacing and placement.”
Statement Lighting
“Lighting will have its biggest year yet, with bolder sconce choices and innovative techniques in blown glass, jewel-like fixtures, and organic shapes,” says Alexander. Illuminate your space with Alexander’s favorites: John Pomp, Eny Lee, and anything from The Future Perfect.
Maximalist Momentum
Tara McCauley has noticed a shift away from the colorless aesthetic that was once popular to make a house more “sellable.” “The focus seems to be too much on building resale value for the future and not enough on designing a home that brings you joy while you live there,” McCauley explains. “I’ve seen a significant increase in color, texture, and layers in the past year—the demand is definitely there.”
Moody Color Palettes
Contrary to popular belief, dark colors don’t make rooms appear smaller. In fact, when used correctly, they can create the illusion of vast space. For a dramatic yet effortless look, paint your living room in plum, black, navy blue, burgundy, or gray. “Every house should have one moody room—whether it’s a study, a library, or a game room. It’s sexy and fun!” says designer Elissa Grayer.
English Countryside
The English countryside aesthetic is making its way to the United States, according to Next Wave designer DuVäl. In this New England farmhouse living room designed by Katie Rosenfeld, a charming and warm atmosphere is created through grandmillennial touches and thoughtful layering. By using oversized custom furnishings in a creamy palette mixed with painted furniture and cozy elements, Rosenfeld and her team achieved a “come sit by the fire and stay awhile” vibe.
