Philippe Starck was born in 1949 to an aeronautic engineer father who spent a lot of time designing airplanes. From that he learned a firm lesson; everything should be organized elegantly and rigorously.
“Subversive, ethical, ecological, political, humorous… this is how I see my duty as a designer.”
His anticipatory concern for environmental implications, societal mutations, emerging lifestyles, and positive reduction have translated over the years into a determination to help change the world, which as in turn accompanied his iconic creative process. From everyday products such as furniture and lemon squeezers to revolutionary micro wind turbines and electric cars, and hotels that aspire to be wondrous, Philippe Starck never ceases to push the boundaries of contemporary design.

In 1983 Philippe Starck was discovered by the general public when the then French President François Mitterrand chose his project to reinvent the private flat of the presidential palace at the Elysée Palace. From that moment on, the artist would never stop between building design or designing simple daily objects. The following year his international fame was firmly established thanks to the success of the Café Costes. His reinvention of the codes of the Parisian cafe made it the cafe par excellence.

Nowadays, many of his designs have become somewhat cult objects and his hotels timeless icons that add a new dimension to global cityscapes. With over 30 years of career in design, Starck has many restaurant and hotel projects to his credit, including ones such as the Royalton in New York, the Delano in Miami, the Hotel Fasano in Rio de Janeiro, the St Martin’s Lane in London, the Sanderson, Le Paradis du Fruit in France, and the complete renovation of the historic Clift in San Francisco.

Currently, Philippe Starck is one of the most famous and influential designers in the world. He lives in Portugal with his wife and youngest daughter and is still working on many projects of democratic design.
